While taking a walk in Highgate Cemetery, London Richard Nygaard came upon a small tombstone with the inscription “And with the Morn those Angel Faces Smile”. Inspired by the cemetery’s grounds, full of old-growth trees, shrubbery and wild flowers, he wrote the song “Angel Faces Smile”. He later learned that the epitaph where taken from the poem “The Pillar of Cloud” by John Henry Newman (1801–1890). But Richard Nygaard’s lyrics are essentially his own.
